Found in the Forest | Lily of the Valley

May 31, 2016 By Jodi

Spring takes its time arriving to our part of Sweden. We still have wide swaths of lily of the valley in the forest near our home, which I love to stoop down to smell. I just learned that it's highly poisonous (which I should have remembered from Breaking Bad!), so don't let your little ones eat it.  Its scientific name, Convallaria majalis or maialis, means "of or belonging to May." Lucky for us in Sweden, we can continue enjoying it into June.

What's your favorite spring flower?

David-James-Duncan-writing

A few years ago I was sitting in a cafe in Santa Barbara and felt an overwhelming urge to write to David James Duncan. I had just read a piece by him in The Best American Essays 2009 about birds and extinction and disintegrating marriage, which left me weeping at my table.

Spending All Day At the Playground

Fredhalls plaskdamm

We needed a mini-adventure today, so we packed everyone into the car and drove into Stockholm. Our destination was a new (to us) playground in a part of town we've never visited. We stopped at the grocery store on the way down and picked up enough snacks to last us the day, and then we...

The weekend is nearly here and we're finally recovering from jetlag. The boys and I slept the whole night through for the first time since returning from Michigan, which has done wonders for my sanity and ability to write semi-coherent sentences. To answer the question that's surely on your mind after seeing the picture above: yes, I've...
