Found in the Forest | Lily of the Valley

May 31, 2016 By Jodi

Spring takes its time arriving to our part of Sweden. We still have wide swaths of lily of the valley in the forest near our home, which I love to stoop down to smell. I just learned that it's highly poisonous (which I should have remembered from Breaking Bad!), so don't let your little ones eat it.  Its scientific name, Convallaria majalis or maialis, means "of or belonging to May." Lucky for us in Sweden, we can continue enjoying it into June.

What's your favorite spring flower?

Mom and kids on couch reading

Does anyone else ever feel that going to work is like taking a vacation compared to being home with three-foot-tall tyrants all day? That parenting is the most difficult thing you've ever done, far more challenging than any job? Further, that being a parent has forced you to develop skills, strategies, and coping mechanisms you...

benjamin-franklin-virtues-temperance

For the first month of my new happiness project, I'm focusing on my general health and wellness. I think it's important to boost this project with an infusion of energy and vitality--something I don't always feel as the mother of two young children with a third on the way. So my resolutions this month will be focused...

"Why Am I Still Thinking About This Day?"

Looking down at a street scene from above

I listened to a podcast last week that I've been thinking about ever since. It was an episode of Magic Lessons (Season 1, Episode 10) in which Elizabeth Gilbert talks to the humorist John Hodgman about creativity and trying new things. Hodgman explains that at a friend's prompting, he scheduled a series of weekly shows at a small theater in Brooklyn....

Indulgent Blue Moodboard made with Photoshop for Dear Sabrina

This month's happiness project is focused on learning. For once, I can report that it's going well so far! I wanted to work on my Swedish this month, and I've been listening to more talk radio and reading more books with the intention of comprehension (normally I skim the local newspaper with the intention of getting half...
