Sharing sad news

October 14, 2016 By Jodi

black and white sea with fog

My dear readers,

With a heavy heart, I share the news that my father passed away yesterday. It is hard to be so far away from family in this time, and we hope to be traveling to Michigan soon to share in the love, comfort, and laughter of dear friends and family.

Several of my witty, talented friends have offered to share their words, photographs, and thoughts on Dear Sabrina about a whole host of topics in the coming days and weeks, so please keep checking the blog for new posts. I hope also to continue posting and sharing thoughts with you in this time, as I've come to deeply enjoy the small community building up around Dear Sabrina.

Have a lovely, lovely weekend, full of hugs and laughter with the people you love most.

Solitary cabin in winter, we are all islands

Starting a happiness project is all the easier when someone does the legwork for you. Freed from having to think too much about it, it was easy to get started on January's theme of self-knowledge by picking up a handful of suggestions from Gretchen and throwing in a couple resolutions of my own. The idea...

Happiness Project: Month 2--Making A Home

living-room-with-view

The first month of my happiness project may have fizzled out, but that doesn't mean I'm giving up. Rather, I spent the weekend rethinking what I'm doing with this project in general, and what I'm doing in the second month in particular. One of the things that really attracted me to the idea of a happiness...

Have You Ever Written to an Author?

David-James-Duncan-writing

A few years ago I was sitting in a cafe in Santa Barbara and felt an overwhelming urge to write to David James Duncan. I had just read a piece by him in The Best American Essays 2009 about birds and extinction and disintegrating marriage, which left me weeping at my table.

Let's Talk About the Moon

Waxing crescent moon

For some reason, I've got it stuck in my head that I'm going to teach my kids, from the very beginning, about the stages of the moon. I think it would be so cool to hear a tiny human voice say, "Look mama! A waning crescent moon!" With that in mind, any time we see the...
